Effective Use of Goal Setting

How can goals be most effectively used?
  • Definition of different types of goals;
  • It is ideal to set up different goals for different task, and even more beneficial to have different goals that focus on different aspect of performance.
The purpose of the following chart is to provide you with in-depth description of the types of goal, so you can start thinking about setting goals for specific skills to work on.
(subjective goals, general goals, specific goals, outcome goals, performance goals, process goals)

So how exactly does goal setting help?
  • Goals act as a guide, providing direction;
  • Goals, as I mention earlier, trials and errors, provides feedback;
  • Goals act as a motivator, providing daily purpose.

Effectiveness of goal setting
  • Should identify short term goals, long term goals;
  • Should identify task goals that links with outcome goals;
  • Take action - apply into practices and other competitions;
  • Evaluation of goals.

The Following are four specific types of goal setting:
(dream goals, long term goals, short term goals, daily goals)

A number of studies have proven athletes do experience

enhanced performance with a combination of long term goals

and short term goals rather than long term goals alone

(Roberts, G. C. 2001).

Through all these definitions of goals and goal setting, hopefully it has provided you with enough information and knowledge of what exactly you need in order to enhance performances and reach to a higher level in competition.
